TruWest Pure PrairieSmoke

TruWest Pure PrairieSmoke was the first of our foals by H-Saracen. His granddam was Bobbi’s Morgan mare Flee Powderwing, purchased in 1972 from John and Selma Blankenship who raised Hereford cattle and Morgan horses on their ranch on Burns Creek. Powder’s pedigree includes Fleetfield on the top side and Warhawk on the bottom. Smokey’s dam, Pure D Powder, was one of several Powderwing daughters who worked with us on the ranch and produced outstanding cowhorses for us and many others.

Smokey’s Pedigree

Smokey was professionally trained as a reining horse. At the First Canadian National Morgan Show in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1997, he won the Championships in Working Cowhorse, Open Reining and Freestyle Reining. He was the Grand Champion Stallion at the Dawson County Open Horse Show in Glendive, Montana in 2002, and was never beaten in a Working Cowhorse competition. Wherever we went, we received many compliments on his beauty, style, and willing, calm disposition.

Smokey was gentle, kind, and easy to handle.  All of us could ride him, so he was called upon to do his share of work on the ranch. Smokey loved to work and accepted new assignments joyfully.  Bobbi would love to tell you about Smokey’s first venture into pasture roping.

Smokey sired 63 foals. All have been wonderfully consistent for correctness and balance; they have cute, trim heads and lovely temperaments.  Smokey’s foals were easy to start, they want to work cattle and are smooth travelers with a lot of style.

We had to let Smokey go home in the fall of 2021. His legacy lives on through his beautiful daughters and his only breeding son, our own TruWest Smokey Mntn Chief.
